This month, we are focusing on living a Healthy Lifestyle to ensure optimal wellness and quality of life! Here at our Las Colinas practice, we use a functional medicine approach with our patients. We believe in the power of the human body, and that there is a big difference between going through life feeling sub-par versus living your best life with vitality and wellness!
Our goal is to be proactive and assist our patients through an individualized health and wellness plan through education and empowerment. We believe that the provider and patient should partner together for the best optimal outcomes.
Our providers recognize that successful treatment and optimal health can only be achieved with a whole body/whole mind approach and by looking at the root causes of any symptoms you may be experiencing. If the root cause isn’t addressed, you might be able to achieve some relief of symptoms by the “pill for every ill” approach to medicine, but the condition itself isn’t going to go away on its own and, in fact, could progress. We are here to help you enjoy a healthy lifestyle!

First, we spend quality time with our patients. Initial appointments are 2 hours in length, and follow-ups are usually at least 1 hour. We treat everyone as an individual and understand that there are no cookie-cutter diagnoses or treatments. Additionally, we focus on prevention and cures through an integrative approach that includes hormone balance, nutrition, diet, exercise, and stress management. We strive to be both your partner and advocate in your healthcare journey.
Our providers don’t just manage hormones or thyroid conditions. They will ensure that you are staying up to date on your other health screenings and check-ups since these can help find potential health issues before they become a problem. Early detection of disease gives you the best chance of getting the proper treatment quickly, avoiding any complications, and can even save your life.
Important Screenings for a Healthy Lifestyle
The lab testing that we do for our patients is also very comprehensive and can also help to identify potential health issues. When you know what is going on in your body and find that there are issues that need to be addressed, you can take action based on our expertise along with that of your other healthcare professionals to prevent things from progressing.
Our providers can provide you with expert advice and knowledge based on their years of experience and practice. Because we look at root causes and potential red flags for chronic disease, those things can be addressed and, in many cases, halted or reversed so that we can get you feeling your absolute best!
Here are the most common screenings that we encourage our patients to have:
- Bone density screening
- Colonoscopy
- Prostate cancer screening (men)
- Mammogram (women)
- Pam smear (women)
- Regular dental exams
- Skin cancer screening
- Blood pressure screening *
- Cholesterol screening *
- Blood glucose screening *
*We will check these items for you during your appointments with us.
Living A Healthy Lifestyle
Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about eating a clean diet and being active. Here are some of the basics:
- Exercise
- Eating well
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Not smoking
- Drink alcohol in moderation
Some of the other, not-so-obvious things, are equally as important to your overall health and include:
- Get enough quality sleep
- Brush and floss daily; your oral health has a significant impact on your overall health
- Stay up to date on health screenings and check-ups
- Connect socially; studies show that having meaningful connections with others can help prevent some chronic diseases, in addition to helping you maintain good mental health
- Proactively manage stress
- Practice mindfulness techniques such as meditation or prayer
- Practice having an attitude of gratitude

According to a Harvard study, people who met the criteria for all five of the first set of habits have enjoyed significantly, impressively longer lives: 14 additional years of life for women and 12 years for men. Just adding one healthy habit, just one, can extend life expectancy by two years in men and women. Not surprisingly, the more healthy habits that people have, the longer their lifespan will be. It can seem daunting to make so many changes, however, it’s much easier to live a healthy lifestyle when you start with just one change at a time.
How We Can Help You Live a Life of Wellness!
As mentioned above, we have longer appointments with our patients so that we can spend quality time getting to know them, their symptoms, and health concerns and help them reach their health goals. We are also willing to collaborate with your other providers so that everyone is on the same page regarding your health care!

The Importance of Your Gut as it Relates to Wellness
The gut is often referred to as the “second brain.” In fact, your gut microbiome is a key player in your immune response. If you have an unhealthy gut microbiome, it’s likely that you are experiencing other, seemingly unrelated symptoms that may appear to have an unknown cause. These can range from digestive issues to skin rashes to autoimmune diseases. Additionally, over time, an unhealthy gut can cause chronic disease in addition to mental health disorders such as depression. Once identified, we can treat the gut issues, which can greatly improve your health and quality of life and very likely add years to your lifespan!
We offer the Alcat Food Sensitivity Test, The Genoma GI Effects test, and the Nutreval. For additional information on gut health and the testing that we offer, please click here.
